Ships
Ships are good exercise! Climb up, step down. If I had been in the Navy, most of my injuries would be falling down the stairs. I'm glad some people are brave enough to protect our freedom.
A Crabby Good Time
Yesterday the biologists dropped a crab trap in the bay. We looked for it on our way to Morris Island, but didn't find it. On the way back our boat captain spotted it a mile from where they dropped it. That is how strong the current and wind is.
They caught a female blue crab, and some other crabs. We got to see them.
They also showed us a poisonous jelly fish!
Morris Island
We learned about island formation. Sand washes around the island moving it over time. But even more exciting is that long ago the sand we were standing on was part of the Appalachian Mountains. So we were at the beach and the mountains at the same time!
We saw jelly fish, crabs, different shells. And we ran on the beach.
History about Fort Sumpter
Southern forces told Northern soldiers to leave. Lt. Anderson moved his men from Ft Moultrie to Ft Sumpter. A Northern Navy ship tried bring supplies to Lt Anderson and his men. Southern forces fired cannons at and drove off the supply ship.
On Morris island a regiment of African American soldiers in the Northern Army charged a Southern fort. These heros made a great sacrifice for freedom. The movie Glory was based their story.
Heading to the Island
Forty-five kids, four teachers on a boat. We're seeing container ships and lots of waves. It's windy today.
Sleepers
Traffic is a sleeper right now. Too many cars; going no where. Best way to handle it? Be a sleeper yourself...but only if you're on the trip. No sleeping in class. Get back to work.
